Facebook to Allow Transfer of Photos, Videos to Google

Facebook has begun testing a tool on Monday that will allow users to more easily transfer their photos and videos to Google and other online services, as regulators pressured to ease access to data.

HIGHLIGHTS

The tool will initially be available to people in Ireland

It will be launched worldwide later in the first half of 2020

Regulators have checked Facebook’s control over personal information

With the new social network tool, users can transfer their photos and videos directly to competing platforms, starting with Google Photos. The company announced that it will be available to people in Ireland for the first time and will evolve based on user feedback.

The Facebook Broadcasting Tool will first be available in Ireland and then move to other countries.

The tool will be rolled out globally in the first half of 2020.

US and European regulators have investigated Facebook’s control over personal information, such as images, to determine whether the technology giant’s dominance is inhibiting competition and limiting consumer choice. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has responded by calling for new rules to address “data portability” and other issues.

Facebook said that while working on a set of new data portability tools, discussions were held with policymakers, regulators, and scientists in the UK, Germany, Brazil, and Singapore to find out which data should be portable and how privacy could be protected.

The company develops products that “take into account the feedback we’ve received and will help drive data portability policies forward by giving people and experts a tool to assess,” said Steve Satterfield, director of privacy and public policy, in a blog post.
