How to Set Up Voicemail on iPhone

Do you have a new iPhone? Well, then it’s time to set up visual voicemail on your iPhone. Don’t know how to set up voicemail on iPhone? Don’t worry. We’ve got you.

Let’s talk a bit about Voicemail

The Voicemail feature on an iPhone allows you to view all your voicemails without first calling a number. Visual voicemail lists of all your voicemail messages so you can choose which ones to listen to now or later and which ones you want to share or delete.

Depending on the iPhone model and location, you may also be able to read transcripts of your voicemail messages using the iPhone’s voicemail-to-text feature. You can manage, delete and playback your voicemails via this convenient menu. But first, you need to know how to set it up and work properly.

This process should work on most modern iPhones right up to the brand new 11 models. However, you should make sure iOS is updated before you start. Go to Settings> General> Software Update.

Once you’ve upgraded to the latest version of iOS 13, you should be ready. If you have not set up base voicemail through your mobile service provider, first read our additional tip and make sure everything is ready for visual voicemail.

  • You can even save your visual voicemail messages as notes or voice notes, or share them with apps like News, Mail, or Airdrop.

Set up voicemail on your iPhone

Almost every telephone company in North America now supports visual voicemail. Apple has a complete list of network operators and their support if you want to check. However, if you use a large network operator, you are probably protected. The following must be done:

  1. Go to the phone app situated at the bottom of your iPhone home screen and tap it. At the bottom of the phone window, you will see the voicemail icon in the right corner. Select this option to open your visual voicemail.
  • The voicemail screen should display an empty area with a setup button in the center of the screen. Select this. Now the choice is yours: If you’ve been using the iPhone’s voicemail service in the past and have already logged in, you can enter your old password here to automatically access your old voicemails. If you’ve never used a visual voice mail, you’ll need to create a password and re-enter it. When finished, select Done.
  • Now your iPhone opens the Welcome screen. If you are not particularly interested in the greeting, you can select Default and then Done to skip this step. To personalize your greeting, select Custom, then Record to record your greeting, and play to repeat. When you are satisfied, select Done.
  • Your iPhone voicemail is now officially set up. But here’s how to move voice mail to Apple services. You can share voicemails with AirDrop; send them to others, save audio memos to save space, and much more. Check your options and familiarize yourself with the voicemail system.

Set up a visual voicemail transcript on iPhone

Starting on iOS 10, iPhone 6+ models will display both your visual voicemail and a text message log. Voicemail transcripts record the audio file and perform it using machine-learning through Apple Server to convert the audio to text. That way, you can listen or read your messages.

To see both, Siri has to be activated via Settings> Siri & Search> and language English (USA) or English (Canada). Although the transcriptional function is in the beta phase, it is fairly accurate for the most part. After you set it up, you can tap on a previous or existing message and start a new text transcription.

Not Satisfied? Try an app

If you’re not impressed with Apple’s visual voicemail interface, you can search for an iOS visual voicemail app that replaces it. We recommend testing an app like InstaVoice or YouMail.

These apps offer unique user interfaces and additional features (like linking multiple phone numbers) that you may prefer over Apple’s standard offering. Both apps are free downloads.

How to Set up basic voicemail on the iPhone

You may want to set up and use the basic voicemail on your phone until you are ready for a visual voicemail. If you’ve just switched providers, or if this is your first provider, you probably need to set up the base voicemail directly with him.

This is a good option if you are still familiar with your phone and want to use traditional voicemail until the visual voicemail app is set up.

Most of these setup procedures require dialing the correct number and setting up your voicemail over the phone but are slightly different. Let’s go over the main forwarders to see what they need.

  • AT&T: Here you can read the specific instructions of AT&T. You want to start by pressing the voicemail key or by holding down the “1” key. Then, set up a welcome and password (required) for your voicemail. With AT & T you can also update your voicemail to get more storage space. However, this is not required to set up a visual voice mail.
  • Verizon: Verizon has a FAQ Help page for Android phones on its website. However, they will be redirected to the Apple Statement page for setting up visual voicemail on your iPhone.
  • T-Mobile: T-Mobile, like Verizon, directs you to the Apple statement page to set up a visual voice mail.
  • Sprint: If you have a Sprint phone, you must also press and hold “1” here. Here you can learn more about the process.
