Everyone who owns an iPhone, iPad, iPod or Apple Watch has an Apple ID. This is essential to get the most out of Apple’s services, including the iTunes Store, App Store, Apple Music, and iCloud. However, an Apple ID is not the only credentials account that you need to keep track of these days, and there’s always the possibility that you might forget certain credentials, such as: For example, your very important password.

Luckily, there’s no need to panic if you forget your Apple ID password. There are steps you can take to reset it, which are all pretty easy. However, Apple has no way to tell you by e-mail what your current password is. Instead, a forgotten Apple ID password must be completely reset for each method. Here’s how to do it.

How to reset your apple id password using the Apple ID account page

If you’re having trouble trying to sign in with your Apple ID password, please follow these steps to get back to your account.

Your Apple ID is the one you use for everything you do with Apple, such as: For example, when you shop in the iTunes Store, sign in to iCloud, buy an app, and more.

To reset your password, you need to know the email address for your Apple ID. You do not know the email address of your Apple ID?

Reset your apple password

The instructions vary depending on the type of security you use for your Apple ID. For example, if you are asked to confirm your phone number, use the steps for two-factor authentication. Choose the type you are using:

Two-factor authentication

If your Apple ID has two-factor authentication enabled, you can reset your password from any trusted iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac with an enabled password or password code. Cannot access one of your devices?

On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  1. Make sure that your device has iOS 10 or later.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Tap [your name] > Password & Security > Change Password, then follow the onscreen steps to update your password. For iOS 10.2 or earlier, tap iCloud > [your name] > Password & Security > Change Password, then follow the onscreen steps.

On iOS 10.2 or earlier, touch iCloud> Forget the Apple ID or password, and then follow the instructions on the screen.

On your Mac

With macOS Catalina:

  1. Choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Apple ID.
  2. Click Password & Security.
  3. If you’re asked to enter your Apple ID password, click “Forgot Apple ID or password” and follow the onscreen instructions. You can skip the final steps below.
  4. Click Change Password. Before you can reset your Apple ID password, you’ll be required to enter the password you used to unlock your Mac.

Need help with these steps? You may not be signed in to iCloud. Choose Apple > System Preferences and click Apple ID. Click “Forgot Apple ID or Password” and follow the instructions on the screen.

With macOS Mojave, High Sierra, or Sierra:

  1. Choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click iCloud.
  2. Choose Account Details.
  3. If you’re asked to enter your Apple ID password, click “Forgot Apple ID or password” and follow the onscreen instructions. You can skip the final steps below.
  4. Click Security > Reset Password. Before you can reset your Apple ID password, you’ll be required to enter the password you used to unlock your Mac.

Need help with these steps? You may not be signed in to iCloud. Choose Apple menu> System Preferences and click iCloud. Click “Forgot Apple ID or Password” and follow the instructions on the screen.

Use a recovery key

If you have upgraded your Apple ID from 2-step verification to iOS-factor 2-factor authentication in iOS 11 and later, or in macOS High Sierra and above and have a recovery key, you can use the recovery key to reset your password.

If you cannot access any of your devices

You can reset your Apple ID password on a friend’s or family member’s iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch using the Apple Support app or the Find My app.

Use the Apple Support app to reset your password

To reset your password using the Apple Support app on a friend or family member’s device, the device owner must download the Apple Support App.

To download the Apple Support App, the device owner must open the App Store on their iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, search for Apple Support and download the app. You can also open this article on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch and download the Apple Support App from the App Store.

After the device owner downloads the Apple Support app, he must hand you the device. Any information you enter will not be stored on the device. Open the Apple Support App on the device and follow these steps:

  1. Tap the Get Support tab at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Scroll down and tap Apple ID.
  3. Tap Forgot Apple ID Password, then tap Get Started.

  5. Enter the Apple ID that you need to reset the password for.

If you can’t get the Apple Support app

If you’re borrowing the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch of a friend or family member and they cannot download the Apple Support app, follow these steps to reset your Apple ID password:

  1. Open the Find My iPhone app. You need iOS 9 through 12 to use Find My iPhone. 
  2. When a Sign In screen appears, make sure the Apple ID field is empty. If you see someone else’s user name, erase it.
  3. Tap Forgot Apple ID or Password, and then follow the onscreen steps.

You do not see a login screen? Touch Sign out. After logging out, make sure the Apple ID field is empty. Then tap “Forgot your Apple ID or password” and follow the instructions on the screen.

Accounts with or without security questions

  1. Go to your Apple ID account page and click “Forgot Apple ID or password.”
  2. Enter your Apple ID. Did you forget your Apple ID?
  3. Select the option to reset your password, then choose Continue.
  4. Choose how to reset your password:
    1. If you have an account with security questions set up, you can select “Answer security questions” and follow the rest of the steps.
    1. To get an email instead, select “Get an email.” To reset your password, use the email that we send to your primary or rescue email addressDidn’t get the email?
    1. If asked for a Recovery Key, use the steps for two-factor authentication or two-step verification instead.

After you have reset your password, you will be asked to sign in again with your new password. You may also need to update your password in the settings of your devices.

* If you have permanently lost your recovery key or access to your trusted device, you will not be able to change your password.
