Google Maps turns 15 this year. Google has announced a slight redesign of the app and has added one of the most frequently used apps worldwide. More than 1 billion people are now turning to Google Maps to see and explore the world, the company said.
In addition to a few new functions, the huge search engine is also launching a new icon for the app. Before we get to the functions, let’s first look at the redesign of the symbols.
One of the major changes is the icon, which shows a series of transitions from the classic map intersection icon, just like a new Google pin on a white background that better matches the branding of other Google applications.

Google has dominated the navigation app market in recent years, but the latest updates seem to aim to be ahead of the challengers, including Apple, which recently reworked its own Apple Maps application. The previous solid red “pins” that indicate card locations are now made up of the four colors used in other Google logos.
“Starting today, you’ll see an updated Google Maps app for Android and iOS that gives you everything you need at your fingertips with five easy-to-access tabs: Explore, Commute, Saved, Contribute and Updates,” Google said in the app with blog entry.
Below is information on the various new and updated features for the 15th anniversary of Google Maps:
Explore tab: The Explore tab shows reviews and details about restaurants, shops, theaters, and other venues using the location detection features of your Android and iOS smartphones.
“Trip” tab: This tab ensures that efficient routes to or from work are provided regardless of whether people are using or using public transportation. In addition, your daily commuting is set up to receive traffic information, travel times and suggestions for alternative routes in real time
Saved: The Saved tab gives users access to more than 6.5 billion locations saved by Google Maps users. You can also share recommendations of places you’ve been to.
Contribute: With the new Google Maps look, a “Contribute” tab is inserted into a menu at the bottom of the service’s mobile app, according to Google in a blog post. The new Contribute tab makes it easy to share local information, such as: B. Details of streets and addresses, missing places, photos, etc. to help other users find recommendations.
Updates: This is another useful tab that will help you stay up to date with the trend points around you. In addition to discovering, storing, and sharing recommendations with your network, you can also chat directly with businesses to get answers to questions, Google adds.
Other features include a fun party icon that allows you to view real-time directions that are displayed with augmented reality. This function will be particularly useful for pedestrian traffic. The app essentially uses augmented reality to display routes in real time. The use of a camera also offers the traveler better visibility.
Google has more than a billion active users per month for its app and has mapped more than 220 countries and territories and offers live traffic information in 171 countries.
Last year, Google added a feature that predicts how crowded a bus, train, or subway will be.
Transit treats have been improved to take into account whether buses or trains are hot or cold. Accommodation for people with disabilities and whether there is security on board.
For Google Maps, however, not everything was child’s play. The app was previously a disinformation target and, according to Google, three million fake company profiles were deleted by users in 2018 alone.
