A Bloomberg’s report said that Reliance is planning to launch an Indian budget-friendly Jio smartphone that can run Android.
The company has reportedly asked local suppliers to increase production capacity so they can manufacture up to 200 million smartphones over the next two years.
Bloomberg’s report also mentioned that the company plans to launch a smartphone around Rs 4,000.
Many smartphone manufacturers have expanded their production capacities in the country, including Apple, which will also open its official online shop in the country tomorrow.
“We are of course trying to build up our domestic businesses. We have a sweet spot on entry-level phones, ”said Pankaj Mohindroo, chairman of the India Cellular & Electronic Association. “The world has realized that India is a great place to do business and a great place to manufacture too.”
Also of note is Reliance’s recent partnership with Google, in which the companies have announced that they will be working together on “affordable 5G smartphones”. As part of this partnership, Google will invest $4.5 billion in Jio and collaborate on technology initiatives.
However, that partnership is still under regulatory review, which means Reliance is currently working on its own on this smartphone plan.
