How to Install Kodi on Roku – A Step by Step Guide

Before we start with How to Install Kodi on Roku, here is something to start. The majority of the entertainment industry has been influenced by the evolution of Internet services. Before the Internet, cable boxes were the main sources that entertain the masses via television.

However, there will be no room for cable TV in the future with the Internet. There are hundreds of online streaming services and devices like Roku and Amazon Fire TV that provide you with the ultimate entertainment experience.

Roku is one of the best streaming devices we have. This is a brilliant technique that offers you a whole range of entertainment on the internet. From Pandora to Netflix, you have all the streaming applications that provide you with high-quality streaming of music, movies, TV shows and whatever.

The latest Roku 4 can stream 4K content directly to your TV. The new Roku OS 8 update also supports antenna-based television on Roku devices. For more information about Roku OS 8, see this post.

On the other hand, we have Kodi. Kodi is free and open-source media player software that lets you stream movies, TV shows, LIVE TV, and music. Kodi is a free service that gives you free access to the latest entertainment programs, which sounds strange or illegal in some countries.

For this reason, it is always recommended to use VPN while using Kodi. If Kodi and Roku get together in the same package, nothing can be better.

But, Can we install Kodi on Roku?

Here is the answer. Kodi is an open-source media player application software that requires an operating system that allows an end-user to access the software. Kodi is a native C / C ++-based application that Roku currently does not support. Kodi is very flexible and can be installed on Android, Windows, iOS (Jailbroken), Linux and even on Rasberry Pi.

Roku, however, runs on its own Linux-based operating system, namely Roku OS, which is based on Linux, but there is no official documentation on Roku OS. In addition, there is no way to access Roku’s root files. Jailbreak Roku is also no solution for Kodi. In simple terms, there is no Kodi for Roku. For technical reasons, it is not possible to install Kodi on Roku.

So we have Kodi for Roku? The answer is – “No but wait”. We just cannot wait for a miracle that Kodi automatically installs on Roku. Let’s make it easy.

If you use Kodi to stream movies and TV shows, a VPN is strongly recommended. Streaming copyrighted content is not at all secure. Government agencies and ISPs know what you are doing on the internet. Use Cyberghost VPN to hide your IP address. Once you’re connected to Cyberghost VPN, you can stream everything anonymously. Get Cyberghost VPN now.

If you do not want to use Cyberghost VPN for some reason, you can try NordVPN, which offers cheap VPN packages. You can use NordVPN on Windows, Android, Mac OS, iOS, Android TV and Linux. Try the NordVPN for only 2.99 USD / month.

Get Kodi on Roku

Technically, we cannot install Kodi on Roku, but we can use the Roku feature to get Kodi on the TV screen. What we do now is Mirror Kodi on Roku. Kodi is available for Windows, Android, iOS, Mac OS and with the devices running on Windows, Android etc., we can mirror the Kodi on Roku. To do that. Follow the steps:

1. First, you need to enter Roku Home> Go to Settings> System Updates. Make sure you have the latest Roku operating system and update the software if any updates are available. (Should be v.5.6 or higher).

Recently, Roku Roku has introduced OS 8 on all Roku devices. Roku OS 8 is a free update and will be available on Roku sticks, Roku boxes and Roku partner TVs such as Rokus TCL TV. The update is not available on older Roku devices. You will receive the Roku OS 8 update by the end of 2017 if you have not yet received the Roku OS 8 update.

2. Go back to Settings> Screen Mirroring. This is the latest feature in Roku. Open it and turn on screen mirroring.

3. After turning on Roku’s screen mirroring, you can start mirroring from any desired device. Be it a Windows laptop, an Android phone or an iPhone.

If you own a Roku Express or try to install Kodi on Roku Express, I would like to tell my friend that Roku Express does NOT support screen mirroring. For more information about screen reflection, contact Roku Express. Roku added the screen mirroring feature with the Roku OS 7.5 update (except Roku Express & Express +). So if you want to buy Roku Express for Kodi, you should not do this. Instead, you can consider an Amazon Firestick.

Get Kodi on Roku via Android Smartphone

First, make sure your Android smartphone and Roku are connected to the same network.

  1. Go to Settings on your Android and then to Display.
  2. Now there’s a Cast option that lets you mirror the Android screen on your TV via Roku. In some Android phones, you get the same feature with different names like Smart View, Display Mirroring, Screen Casting, Wireless Display, and HTC Connect.
  3. Enable screen mirroring on your Roku by switching to Roku settings.
  4. Once you’ve turned it on, your Android phone will display the name of your Roku, and you’ll only need to select it on your phone. After that, you will see the Android screen on your TV via Roku.

Now you can mirror Kodi on Roku. Open Kodi on your Android smartphone and stream it all over the Roku Screen Mirroring feature on an Android phone.

If you have an additional Android smartphone, you can use it to stream Kodi to Roku. You would get everything you use on Kodi on Android on a larger screen over Roku. So that’s one way to get Kodi for Roku.

With the Roku OS 8 update, Roku now supports LIVE TV. For more information about the Roku OS 8 update, see this post.

Get Kodi on Roku via Windows laptop

You can also download Kodi to Roku from a Windows laptop running Windows 8.1 or later. To obtain Kodi for Roku through Windows Laptop, follow these steps.

Note: I am using a Windows 10 laptop and make sure your laptop and Roku are connected via a network connection (wireless or wired).

  1. Go to Settings in the Start menu.
  2. Now go to Devices. On the left side, there is a submenu. Go to Connected Devices.
  3. Click Add Device at the top.
  4. It is looking for your Roku. Make sure you’ve turned on-screen mirroring in Roku.
  5. Once this is done, you will see your laptop screen on your TV. Now start Kodi on Windows and download Kodi on Roku.

If you’ve upgraded the version of Windows 10, you can also connect Roku to your Windows 10 laptop (version 1703) in other ways by simply tapping the notification icon in the lower-right corner. In it, you get the option “Connect”. Open it and connect your Roku to your TV. Now you can start Kodi on your Windows 10 laptop and you can see it on your TV. Have fun with Kodi on Roku.

You can use Kodi Live TV Add-ons to stream LIVE games, TV shows, movies, and other entertainment programs. And you can mirror all these things from Windows laptop to Roku.

This is the only way you can bring Kodi Roku together, but you can never get the real Kodi software experience like this. Miracast (Roku Mirroring Software) is in beta, causing delays and disconnections. By mirroring Kodi on Roku, you can never experience the true entertainment experience.

How to Enable Developer Mode and Sideload Roku Apps

Maybe you are curious to build your own Roku channels. You may have found a Roku channel to use, but there is no officially supported way to install it. In both cases, you need to know how to enable developer mode and download a Roku app that is not available in the store. You must know the following:

  • Developer mode is mainly for … well, developers, though there are a few channels that you can load from the site for additional entertainment.
  • For example, I’m a fan of MyVideoBuzz, a third-party YouTube channel that’s much faster than Google’s HTML5-based offering. You can even sub-search YouTube videos. The disadvantage: From now on, this only works if you significantly reduce the video quality.
  • It’s also possible to quickly create your own channel for a podcast that you like. Just download this channel, paste a URL into the config.brs document in the source folder, and optionally add some custom images in the images folder. So you have your own podcast channel, which is perfect for binge listeners.

Here’s how to load almost all non-store channels next to your Roku

First step: Activate the developer mode

Go into your living room and turn on the Roku. Enabling developer mode starts with pressing a specific key sequence on the official Roku remote (not the remote app on your phone). Press in the order:

  • Home three times, then
  • Up two times, then
  • Right once, then
  • Left once, then
  • Right once, then
  • Left once, then
  • Right once.

Do it all and you should see the developer’s secret screen:

  1. Make a note of the IP address and username shown here, as you will need them later. When you have received this information, select “Enable Installer and Restart” and then click “OK” on your remote control. You will be asked if you agree with the SKD license agreement:
  2. Click on “I Agree” after reading every single word and you will be prompted to select a password for the development web server.
  3. Make a note of the password you have set, ideally in the place where you previously noted your IP address and username. Your Roku will be restarted now. After booting you can access the developer mode.
Second step: access the developer mode
  1. Open your web browser on a computer that is connected to the same network as your Roku. Paste the previously noted IP address into the URL bar and press Enter. Now, you have to enter your username and password credentials.
  2. Do you remember these? Enter it and click on “Sign in”. Your browser opens the developer mode.
Step three: Upload your app to the Roku

Now, your browser has opened the developer application installer.

  1. Click the “Upload” button and point your browser at your ZIP file.
  2. The file name should appear next to the Upload button.
  3. Click “Install” and the installation process begins. Once that’s done, your app will open instantly on the Roku.

Congratulations! You have downloaded an application from the site. Actually, there is one crucial catch: on your Roku, only one application can ever be loaded on the side. If you want to load another channel side-by-side, your first side-by-side channel will be removed.

The good news: There are not too many Roku channels that can only be loaded from the page. These are hidden Roku channels that you can install without switching to developer mode. So you probably do not want more than one developer channel at a time.

Oh, and if you’re a developer and you want to create a channel yourself, here’s a decent collection of sample channels, including the podcast template above. Take a look at these, hack a bit, and you’re on the right track. Good luck!

Should you use Kodi on Roku?

If you ask me to, just NO. Roku is a renowned brand in the digital entertainment industry, providing us with real entertainment in a legal and ethical manner. On the other hand, Kodi simply streams the videos with torrents and accessing copyrighted content without permission is unethical and illegal.

Kodi has a huge community and there are hundreds of volunteers who support Kodi by constantly working on Kodi add-ons, building Kodi and waiting for the Kodi ecosystem to improve the Kodi experience. You can install Kodi on Windows, Android and all other popular platforms, including iOS and OSX, and we can use the Kodi this way. If you have an Apple TV, you can install Kodi on Apple TV. Information about installing Kodi on Apple TV can be found here.

Mirroring is not a solution to getting Kodi on Roku. We can mirror everything with Google Chromecast, and there are many televisions that have the built-in screen mirroring feature. In addition, the Kodi add-ons are not as reliable as they constantly change sources.

Recently, many Kodi users complained that Exodus Kodi was not working because the source of Fusion was changed to another source. You can check that if your exodus does not work. In some cases, Exodus does not work due to copyright laws. To overcome the limitation and access the secure Internet, it is always recommended to use a VPN.

Just add awesome channels to your Roku and enjoy the true experience of talking to Roku.

Do you really need Kodi on Roku?

Let me tell you that, officially, there is no Kodi for Roku and Screen Mirroring is the only way to get Kodi on Roku, but this is not a proper way to enjoy Roku. You do not need a Kodi to enjoy Roku. Roku already offers you high-quality entertainment through official channels.

You can access Roku channels like Fox, History, and other entertainment channels for free, even in 4K. If you really need Kodi on a streaming box, there are a lot of fully loaded Kodi boxes on the market.

In addition, Roku offers the content that is legal to stream on your TV. So, no need to be concerned about legal issues.

However, if you use Kodi to stream copyrighted content for free, you may be required to take legal action because streaming copyrighted content is illegal in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, India, etc. VPN. Using a good VPN will certainly help you anonymously access the Kodi by hiding the IP address of the device.

The new Roku OS 8 is introduced and there are some changes. If you own a Roku, you will definitely appreciate the new Roku OS 8.

Roku has also launched a new Roku Stick Plus, which is more powerful and faster, providing you with brilliant 4K, HDR and HD streaming with voice control and support for antenna-based television.

What’s new in Roku OS 8?

There are some significant changes in Roku OS 8. Roku said they want to take advantage of Roku’s antenna-based television trend. That’s why Roku OS 8 is now shipping with antenna-based LIVE TV. So, if you search for a TV show on Roku, the results of streaming apps like Netflix and LIVE TV will be displayed on the same results page.

In addition to supporting antenna-based LIVE TV, Roku OS 8 now also supports voice control. Now you can change the input, tune to a local antenna-based channel, launch the streaming apps, and more with your voice. There are several other software gimmicks that include Fast TV Start, where you just have to say “Start Netflix” and Roku turns on your TV with Netflix. If an HDTV antenna is connected, you can ask Roku to tune in to a CBS or ABC channel on TV.

Private Listening under Roku OS 8 was also improved by integrating private listening on local antenna channels. This means that you can enjoy local TV stations privately.

The 4K Spotlight Channel has also received the update with the latest Roku OS 8 update. It’s now easy to find 4K, HDR, and Dolby Vision content available to Roku. Roku is pretty good at incorporating the experience of streaming channels and antenna-based live TV. Since Roku does not create its own content, such as Amazon, Roku also claims that they have more than 5,000 channels that offer a variety of content according to the taste and preferences of the user.

Any best alternative from Kodi Roku?

If you want to use Kodi as the primary entertainment source on your TV or cut cable costs, it’s better to buy Amazon Firestick instead of Roku. You can easily install Kodi on Amazon Firestick.

With the exception of Amazon Entertainment Services, you can easily access other apps like Youtube, Netflix, Hulu, etc. through the Firestick App Store that you normally use at Roku.

Therefore, Amazon Firestick is indeed the next-best alternative for Kodi Roku issues if you want to use Kodi as your primary source of entertainment media. It’s also easy to install Kodi on Firestick. Check Amazon Firestick on Amazon.

Even Roku and Amazon Firestick have another great alternative: NVIDIA SHIELD. NVIDIA SHIELD is a high-end streaming device from the well-known graphics processing company Nvidia. NVIDIA SHIELD is an Android-based streaming device that you can use to install Kodi. You can easily install Kodi on Nvidia Shield. You can switch to NVIDIA SHIELD instead of Roku and Amazon Fire TV. It provides rich picture quality in 4K HDR. In addition, you can play games on Nvidia Shield, which is available exclusively to Shield users. This makes NVIDIA SHIELD the best streaming device when it comes to image quality and full functionality. Check Nvidia Shield on Amazon

For now, do not look for Kodi for Roku, since you cannot install Kodi on Roku since both are based on different architectures and Kodi & Roku are not compatible. If you really wanted Kodi as an entertainment box, look for either Firestick or Nvidia Shield instead of Roku.

Kodi on TV Without Roku, Fire TV, Chromecast

You do not need a streaming device like Fire TV, Roku or Nvidia Shield to install Kodi on your TV. As you already know, you cannot install Kodi on Roku. You can only do the screen mirroring.

In that case, I recommend that you do not use known brands to access illegal content. Use a micro USB to HDMI cable to receive Kodi on the TV. It would cost you less and less; you can save yourself from breaking the law. All you need to do is connect Micro-USB to TV, Kaboom on your Android and HDMI device. Enjoy.
