Google Launches Kormo App In India To Help People Find Entry-Level Jobs

Google announced on Wednesday that it has expanded its job app called ‘Kormo Jobs’ to India as the search giant wants to help millions of people looking for entry-level roles and further displace Microsoft’s LinkedIn relevance in the world’s second-largest internet market.

Google has rolled out the application in India after trialling the service in markets such as in Bangladesh and Indonesia.

Also last year, Google made Kormo available in India under the Jobs brand as a spot on the Google Pay app.

The Spot will now be rebranded as Kormo Jobs on the payment platform as well.

Since providing Jobs as a spot, a number of companies, including Zomato and Dunzo – a Bangalore-based startup that has been invested in – have posted over 2 million verified jobs on the platform, according to Google.

Google announced today that it is renaming Jobs Spot on Google Pay as Kormo Jobs in India and making its standalone Android app available in one of its key overseas markets.

The Kormo Jobs app not only helps users identify open calls for entry-level roles, it also helps them learn new skills and easily create a resume.

The move illustrates Google’s growing interest in promoting a large portion of job-related searches.

The company launched a job search engine in the United States in 2017, which it has since expanded to multiple markets. A virtual business card feature was launched in India earlier this month.

Google’s foray into this category will hurt LinkedIn, which is not well represented in emerging markets.

In India, for example, LinkedIn had about 24 million active users per month on Android in July, according to App Annie, compared to about 22 million in the same period last year. Google reaches around 400 million users in India.

Regardless, any app that helps people find jobs of any kind would be useful – if not more – to tens of millions of Indians as the nation reports record unemployment rates at the height of a global pandemic.
