Google Camera Mod Brings 16x Zoom to the Pixel 4

The Google Pixel 4 comes with a telephoto lens that allows users to zoom in up to 2x, but digital zoom is limited to 8x, which is likely to avoid distorted images. However, this does not mean that the feature in the software can not be activated with a little tweaking by the endlessly resourceful Android developer community. In that case, it was only a matter of time before someone modified Pixel 4’s G-Cam APK to enable higher zoom levels.

Not only did XDA Senior Member, cstark27, increase the maximum zoom in the app, but also use the telephoto camera at higher zoom levels to get outstanding shots with up to 16x zoom. The best news for users is that a root user is not required to install the modifying APK because the package name is different from the original Google Camera app, According to the latest reports.

However, Google Pixel 4 can only be zoomed up to 8x without root access. You still need to roam your device to enable 16x zoom, as shown in the screenshots above. The 16x zoom can also be activated for the normal camera as well as for the telephoto camera. However, images posted by XDA Editor-in-Chief Mishaal Rehman suggest that the telephoto effect is significantly better than the primary lens.

If you have a Pixel 4 and are thinking about rooting it to unlock all the cool features, you can move on to the official XDA thread for complete details on how to proceed. Or you can download the APK (courtesy of cstark27) for your device.

The original Google Pixel will get one more update in December

On November 4, Google released the Android security patches for the pixel family. Well, they’ve released it for all pixel phones except two: the original Google Pixel and Pixel XL. This was the end of the three-year promised security updates. Google made this update schedule clear when the phones were introduced in 2016, but people were still a little upset about it. It turned out that Google still has an update in the store.

Google told The Verge that the original pixels and Pixel XL will not receive the November update, but another update is planned. Next month, Google will release an update that includes “a lot of updates” from the November and December patches. Why do not you update it every month as usual? Good question.

As mentioned before, some people were upset that Google is closing the security updates for Pixel and Pixel XL. This is partly because Google has extended Android 10 to the original Pixel family beyond the promised two Android version updates. This led some to suspect that the monthly updates would continue after the promised three years. However, this does not seem to be the case, so make peace with the last update in December.
