Apple To Open A Floating Store In Singapore’s Marina Bay

Apple announced on Sunday that the company is opening a brand new store in Singapore on the waterfront at Marina Bay.

The Apple Marina Bay Sands Store is the first to actually sit on the water, connected to land by a dock and walkway.

Apple stores are known for clean, bright spaces that are easily filled with pretty, precisely placed products.

But, the company’s newest store really is a place where you want to hang out all day.

The new store will open on Thursday, September 10th.

As at its other locations, the store is implementing health and hygiene policies to keep customers safe during the coronavirus pandemic.

The policy includes mandatory masks, temperature checks, and in-store offer times by appointment only.

  • In addition to its unique location, the store resembles a giant dome, almost a bubble, that offers a 360-degree view of the Singapore skyline.
  • The all-glass dome is self-supporting and consists of 114 pieces of glass connected with only 10 narrow vertical beams.
  • At the top of the dome, there is an oculus that is “inspired by the Pantheon in Rome” and floods the room with light.

But apparently it doesn’t get too blindingly sunny either, as the dome is lined with specially shaped baffles or discs that counteract certain angles of sunlight and even help illuminate the room at night.

According to a statement from Apple, there are trees and greenery around the store to provide additional shade.

“We couldn’t be more excited to open the breathtaking Apple Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, building on our commitment to this special place that began more than 40 years ago,” said Deirdre O’Brien, Apple’s senior vice president of Retail + People, in a statement. “Our passionate and talented team is ready to welcome this community to our new store and deliver the care and support that our customers around the world love.”

As with other stores around the world, visitors can try Apple products and talk to the geniuses of the business (who collectively speak over 23 languages) about their various needs.

There’s also a forum with a video wall that highlights Today at Apple sessions and features local artists. The lower floor of the room is actually underwater, where entrepreneurs and professional events take part in the store’s “boardroom”.
